I know that if I have selected more than one file, at the same time, in the file window, then I can at that same time, assign all these selected images to all of the categories that I wish.  Is this ability to make assignments to more than one file at a time, possible when I, for instance, have three images at the same time displayed in the viewer, or if I have the top image of a collapsed stack selected?

Most IMatch commands work with the current selection. This rule is applied everywhere.
If you select more than one file, you apply commands to all these files.

If you have the top of a stack selected, you have only one file selected.
You have to expand the stack and select the files to which you want to apply the command. In case of version stacks this is easily done with <T> and then <A>.

Exception: If you use versioning with metadata propagation, making changes to a master promotes these changes to the versions, whether or not the version stack is collapsed.

In the Viewer, only one file is selected at a time.
