Automatically Assign newly Added/Updated Files to A Category?

Sorry if this question is naive, I'm new and learning about iMatch as I go:

Is it possible to automatically assign a category (or categories) to newly added and/or updated files? I see that you can apply metadata templates and assign collections using the Preferences>Indexing tab, but there's no obvious way to automatically assign a category on ingest like you can do in Lightroom.

Does it involve variables? Am I missing something?
